Are drill bits universal? - Kylon Powell

Writer Sarah Silva

Drill bits are universal and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The main types are twist drill bits, masonry bit, spade bit, auger bit, brad-point bit and hole saw.

Twist drill bits for use in power drills. Twist bits are easily identified by their rounded cutting edges. These bits are generally very versatile and can be used to bore holes in a variety of materials, although they lack the shear action needed to cut through tougher materials like steel.

The masonry bit is designed to drill through masonry (brick, concrete). It has an azimuthal cutting action that gives it great strength in this area. Masonry bits also have carbide tips which give them extended life when drilling through material that would dull other kinds of drill bits quickly. Unfortunately, you need a strong arm to use these heavy-duty tools, but if you’re using one then you probably don’t mind the extra effort.

A spade bit is generally used with a hand brace or screwdriver to drill holes in wood for nails, especially decking screws. Spade bits are very versatile and can be used on mortise-and-tenon joints as well as on simple hole-making tasks. They come in different sizes, so you can choose the right one for your job. Their versatility makes them really popular with do it yourselfers who like to build things around their home.

Auger bits are more commonly known as “cordless drills” but they are also called auger bits because of their spiral cutting action that moves outwards from the center of the hole being drilled. These tools use a rotating helical blade to bore through material more efficiently than other types of drill bits. This bit design also has a high impact on the life of their blades because they don’t have to work as hard as other bits.
