Writer Gabriel Cooper

What is a fireplace bump out?

Fireplaces often sit in “bump-outs” that protrude from the main body of the house when they are situated along an exterior wall. In addition, a “cantilever” is created beneath the fireplace as a result of this overhang.

What is a bump out?

A bump-out is a minor addition to a house that increases its total square footage but does not reach the scale of a full addition with multiple rooms. There are many different sizes for bump-outs, from a few feet sticking out of the side of the house to a single room.

Can you build out a fireplace?

Do I have the ability to install a fireplace in my home? Assure yourself that a fireplace can be added to an existing home. You’ll have to pick the one that works best for you. Get familiar with the building codes in your area to check for requirements like minimum clearances around vent pipes and emission limits for fireplaces.

How far can you cantilever a bump out?

Cantilevered bump outs are generally permitted to span a distance of four times the depth of the floor joists. Using 2×8 joists, you can cantilever a maximum distance of 29 inches from a 2×8 joist.
