Can acupuncture help lymphatic drainage?

Writer David Wilson

Acupuncture is an alternative medicine that is practiced by inserting needles into specific points on the body to relieve certain symptoms or diseases. Several studies have investigated the mechanism of action of acupuncture, particularly with respect to neurologic effects. Although scientists are not able to explain how it works they know that some type of biological response is triggered when these fine needles are inserted into the body. From this, they conclude that acupuncture is acting on the central and sympathetic nervous systems to correct abnormalities or imbalances in these systems. Regardless of how it works, treatment with needles has proven its worth in the treatment of many painful syndromes and all forms of headaches among many other disorders.

The application of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) philosophy and the modern medicine theory has resulted in a better understanding of pain. This integrated understanding has led TCM and western practitioners to develop and use acupuncture analgesia with greater efficiency and safety (Benedetti, 2010). The mechanism involved is very complex and includes many biochemical factors such as endorphins that are released into the bloodstream during pulse measurements.

Acupuncture Points Some scientists believe that most or all symptoms can be attributed to disturbances in the body’s energy system, which they call “Qi” (pronounced Chee). Here are ways that acupuncture can help with lymphatic drainage.

There are specific acupuncture points used to help with lymphatic drainage. The first is called “cun” which translates as an inch, these points are located around the groin area and are known to be effective for problems such as lymphadenitis or bacterial infections. Another point that is about three fingers width below the collar bone on either side of the neck is called “guan yuan”. This point is also referred to as the nipple line. If this or any other acupuncture points cause an unpleasant sensation they should be discontinued immediately and you should seek medical advice.
