Can Ant Poison Kill Dogs?

Writer Andrew Davis

Fipronil is another common insecticide found in ant killing products. Fipronil is a neurotoxin but the amount found in most domestic baits is not usually enough to result in problems in dogs and cats. Rabbits are particularly sensitive to fipronil and all exposures should be regarded as potentially life-threatening.

Ant poison itself is usually designed not to be toxic to animals, precisely because pets could ingest the product. However, care and caution should always be used when using ant killers or pesticides of any kind around children and pets.

What if a dog eats a fire ant killer?

Signs are normally seen within 6 hours after ingestion and can be life threatening. However, your veterinarian does carry the antidote! Hooray! If your pet is exposed to either fire ants or their killer, please contact your veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline Immediately.

Are Raid ant traps toxic to dogs?

5% is so small that there is no danger to your animal if ingested. Other traps contain a chemical commonly used to kill fleas and if ingested is just as benign. The inert ingredient for the Raid trap happens to be peanut butter. So of course, your dog smells a treat and tries to chew it up to get to the peanut butter!
