The study has identified several fatty acids in coconut oil that are more effective than DEET and repel common insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, and biting flies.
Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing Aro... Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundBecause of its high content of polyunsaturated oils, coconut oil has been deemed a superfood. Coco oil is a good source of healthful fat, and millions around the world are beginning to realize the health advantages of including it in their diets. According to the findings of a recent study, coconut oil is used as a household cure for bug bites..DEET is an active ingredient in many commercially available insect repellents. Healthy concerns about the effects of insecticides and synthetic repellents on the human body prompted this study. This has led to a demand for natural insect repellents.
Although there are many natural and herbal repellents, they do not provide the desired results. Natural repellents usually lose their effectiveness quickly. Coconut oil contains compounds that repel insects, but this was not the case.
The study revealed that the oil repels flies better than DEET, with a rate of over 95%, compared to DEET’s 50%. The oil was found to repel bed bugs and ticks for two weeks, unlike synthetic compounds that only work for three days. It was also found that the oil requires a high acid content to repel mosquitoes, unlike DEET.
Although there are no products that contain such compounds as ingredients, researchers hope to find coconut oil-based repellents for bed bugs and other insects in the near future. The non-toxic nature of coconut fatty acids is well known and they are widely used in the cosmetics and food industries.
