Can Coyotes See Infrared Light?

Writer Sarah Silva

While the only creatures that have been definitively proven to see infrared light are cold-blooded, there are some exciting signs that suggest that foxes — and perhaps other nocturnal mammals like coyotes as well — can read light that appears on the infrared spectrum.

What animals see infrared light?

It is impossible for the human eye to see infrared light because its wavelengths are longer and its energy lower than that of visible light. Mosquitoes, vampire bats, bed bugs, and some snake and beetle species, however, can use portions of the infrared spectrum for vision. Humans are sometimes able to “see” infrared energy as heat.

Do red lights spook coyotes?

Although some of the most effective predator lights are red flashing lights, non-flashing red lights are probably the least effective light in keeping coyotes away. Hunters of coyotes actually recommend using red lights because they are less likely to scare the coyote they are trying to shoot away.

What light can coyotes not see?

Coyotes are color blind by nature and because of this, the best color light for coyote hunting is red. As with green, red is a better color choice because it has a higher wavelength and thus provides some protection against a wavelength cutoff that their eyes cannot see.

Can coyotes see black light?

Coyotes, like dogs and cats, have retinas that are almost entirely composed of rods. They have a superabundance of rods with only few cones. Having a lot of rods means excellent night vision, but they require less light to activate than cones.

Can all snakes see infrared?

In the dark, not all snakes are capable of producing a thermal image. But those with a pit organ are able to use it as an antenna of sorts to detect the infrared radiation emanating from organisms or objects that are warmer than the surrounding atmosphere.

Can human eyes see infrared light?

Infrared light can be seen by the human eye, contrary to popular belief, but only under specific circumstances, as Louis discovered. Researchers used a “double hit” technique in which they shot short bursts of laser light into participants’ eyes, causing them to see flashes of green infrared light.
