Frogs are generally not able to live in saltwater conditions. The salinity of the blood and cells of frogs isn’t as dense like it is in saltwater. If a frog were to live in salt water, it’s likely that the saltwater rapidly spread across the frogs. This could be anxious to dehydration of their body. Dehydration is a risk that could add to a bigger issue: salt spreading throughout the inside of the frog in a toxic way. Due to these reasons, saltwater is a major no-no to the vast majority of frogs that exist.

Crab-eating Frogs (Fejervarya cancrivora) are among the only anomalies in the problem of frogs dwelling in saltwater. The southern Asian amphibians live in water that actually has a little bit of salt in it. Crab-eating frogs are different from the majority of frogs due to the fact that their bodies don’t release ammonia. They contain their chemical compound, urea which increases their amount of ions. This storage decreases the amount of H20 that exits through their skin. The frogs that eat crabs are prevented from being dehydrated in saltwater. There are some species that can survive in saltwater, like African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) and southern leopard frogs (Lithobates Sphenocephalus).

In addition to the mentioned exceptions, frogs generally are not able to survive in salt water or near it. The majority of frogs must stay in freshwater. If they are immersed into salinity, they typically will die in a matter of days or less. This is also true for salamanders and their amphibians.
