Sarah Silva
It is not possible to eat food that is contaminated by Guava Moth. The guava moth is a parasite that is impacting the feijoa market, which is booming in the country and is threatening to endanger a variety of commercial agricultural crops.
Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing Aro... Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundThe Guava moth ( Coscinoptycha improbana) is a tiny speckled moth with white and black spots. It lays eggs on the surface of the fruit and then the caterpillar burrows in the fruit. The caterpillar causes rotting, black patches and excreta, and mold within the fruit, rendering it unpalatable, and also results in early fruit dropping.
A pin-prick-sized hole caused by the larvae digging in it is often visible. The damage may be similar to the damage caused by codling moths, and both are often confused with the same thing. Contrary to codling moths, moths can reproduce throughout the year.
When they indulge in premature fruit drop in the form of exit holes, small discoloration, fruits may appear bruised. In later stages, the excrement of the larvae can be apparent.
It is possible to stop the moths from laying their eggs over the fruit, by hanging Bug Net across the fruit and securing them to the ground. Alternatively, you can cut the net into pieces and wrap it around the fruit. After flowering, wait until wrapping the trees in order so that pollination can occur.
You can tackle it by monitoring levels or tackling low-level infestations by using Guava Moth traps. The traps utilize an odor similar to the scent released by female moths in order to draw males.
If you’re finding five or more moths in 2 weeks, you should spray Neem Oil twice a week in and around the fruit until you are no longer catching moths. Be particularly vigilant when fruit begins to develop because this is the time when moths are most likely to lay eggs.
