Can you get wisdom teeth pulled while wearing braces?

Writer Caleb Butler

The best part is that you have the option to remove your wisdom teeth even if you’re wearing braces. It won’t impact your braces treatment and braces won’t hinder your recovery after wisdom tooth removal! So, there’s no reason to fret about waiting in anticipation of your wisdom teeth being extracted. Many patients are concerned if they’re wearing braces right now and want to have their wisdom teeth removed. The positive side is that you are able to have wisdom teeth extracted in the event that you wear braces at this moment. This won’t alter the treatment you receive with braces, and braces will not affect your recovery after wisdom teeth removal! There’s no reason to be concerned about waiting around to have your wisdom teeth removed.

Should you be a parent of a kid that wears or is expected to wear braces, you might be wondering whether the wisdom teeth’ development could affect the orthodontic treatment that your child is currently receiving. The short answer is not.

You don’t have to wait for your wisdom teeth to grow before beginning treatment with orthodontics. The majority of first-time patients undergo orthodontic treatment prior to wisdom teeth growth, and late-developing molars are not a threat to the alignment of the teeth.

Because wisdom teeth exert very little force, they will not force other teeth away from the way. They only expand when there’s enough space within the mouth. If there isn’t enough space to exist, then they may be able to penetrate the gumline only partially or not appear anyhow.

If wisdom teeth are required to be removed in the near future The procedure won’t affect the progress that has been made using braces because wisdom teeth aren’t a factor in the alignment of other teeth. Any subsequent movement of teeth that occurs after wearing braces is due to the natural shift of teeth as we get older (which is the reason why wearing a retainer is important) but not the wisdom teeth.

If you already have wisdom teeth, they shouldn’t change your strategy to braces. Braces can be used by dentists on your third molars, in addition to the other teeth. If you’ve got wisdom teeth that you’ve decided to not remove but still want to remove, it’s possible to continue with orthodontic treatment. Wisdom teeth can also be removed while a patient wears braces.
