You’re in Portland, You’ve options for festivals and concerts, food trucks, and coffee shops. You want to go exploring, but what about the peak of Mt Rainier? Is it visible from Portland?

Unfortunately, Rainier isn’t always visible. Sometimes it’s obscured by clouds, fog, smoke, or smog.
If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of Mount Rainier from Portland, your best bet is to look for clear days without rain. It’s best to try this on a weekend when more people will be out and about (and hopefully looking up).
Your best bet is probably to go to the Portland Women’s Forum
- If you’re looking for a view of Mt Rainier but don’t want to take an overnight trip, your best bet is probably to go up to the Portland Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint. The viewpoint is located on the Columbia River and has views of Mt St Helens and Mt Adams. It’s open year-round, but check out its website before heading out during the winter, as the road leading up there tends to close in the wintertime due to snowfall.
- Another option is Snoqualmie Pass—an area that straddles Washington state with Oregon just north of it (see above). This area offers some great hiking trails like Rattlesnake Ridge Trail and Mount Si Trail that provide stunning views of Mount Rainier from afar!
Mt Rainier can be seen from Portland, but it’s not a, “Hey look at that,” kind of thing. You can see it from Gifford Pinchot National Forest and the Portland Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint in Columbia River Gorge as well as Mt Rainier National Park on the mountain itself.
Conclusion
Mt. Rainier is a beautiful mountain, but it’s not a place you can just drive to from Portland and see. You have to go a bit out of the way for that, which means taking time off work or school and driving for seven hours straight.
If you want to get closer, though, there are plenty of options within an hour or two of Portland that will give access to some great hiking trails and awesome views from multiple angles.
