Can you work out after getting a cavity filled?

Working after getting a cavity filled is tricky. In most case it I advisable not to do strenuous activities for about 24-48 hours or until the pain and swelling in your mouth goes away.

Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundIf you do work out while hurt, the force of your workout might put pressure on the area where your tooth is damaged and that might cause more damage than good. With that being said there are things that can be done to work out without causing harm to yourself. For example riding a stationary bicycle, elliptical trainer or rowing machine might be possible.
Rowing and elliptical machines are best for this type of workout because there is no impact on your joints and you can adjust level of intensity to match the pain you feel. Another good thing about these two types of exercise is that they elevate heart rate and keep it high enough so that your body burns calories and produces endorphin to alleviate pain.
If those don’t seem like options go for a short walk at low intensity. This might not be as effective as the other 2 exercises but it will still help you work out while hurt. You can also try some Yoga or Pilates moves that involve stretching and don’t require too much pressure on your teeth.
This is why you might want to consider investing in a mouth guard or an athletic mouth piece (especially if you play contact sports like football). These devices will fit over your teeth and allow you to work out but protect them from additional injury.
So what do I recommend? If you really want to work out and can’t walk or if nothing else seems like a good option for you, go with swimming because it is considered the most non-contact exercise out there. And it has the added benefit of being low impact.
However, I still think it’s best if you take a break until your pain is completely gone. There are two main reasons for this:
1) Your teeth are more sensitive when the nerve is exposed so continuing to work out will cause even more pain.
2) You can easily damage your tooth even more and cause yourself more problems.
