Do Ants Attack Each Other?

Writer Gabriel Cooper

When it comes to fighting for control of their tree nests, ants are no different than humans. Losing colonies has severe ramifications: territory loss or colony extinction. After a battle, victorious colonies face the challenge of defending their new territory with a depleted workforce.

Why are my ants attacking each other?

It is common for an ant colony to develop an organized aggressive response if it perceives a threat of losing resources or territory to another ant colony or another ant colony of the same species.

Are ants aggressive to other ants?

It’s not uncommon for ants to wage war on each other in order to gain access to food and other resources. A few ants in a colony will attack each other. Most of the time, the goal is to make the colony stronger. Insects can also be targeted by ants if they are viewed as potential prey.

Can ants join another colony?

Eciton army ants, for example, have been observed to merge with other colonies. It is not uncommon for a new colony to “adopt” an orphan colony (or even individual foragers who have been separated from their foraging column) if the old colony has lost its queen.
