Do cats eat bats? - Kylon Powell

Writer Gabriel Cooper

Cats can, in fact, consume bats. A cat can certainly eat a bat if the opportunity arises, though this does not happen very often. Cats are carnivores who don’t discriminate when it comes to food, so they’ll eat anything. These two species rarely interact, but any cat will attack a bat if it sees one.

Is it possible for a cat to kill a bat?

Domestic cats are suspected of having an impact on wild bird and small mammal populations, but published reports of bat predation are either rare or anecdotal. Although the majority of the bats caught by cats belonged to house-roosting species, at least three of the 11 species were tree- or cave-roosting.

Is it a cause for concern if my cat kills a bat?

Don’t be alarmed, but call animal control to have the dead bats removed. Inform them about what happened to the cats. In contrast to other animals, bats do not need to break the skin in order to transmit rabies. All that is required is for a drop of bat saliva to come into contact with the mucus membrane (lips or eyes).

What if my cat consumes a bat?

Eating a bat may or may not have a negative impact on cats. Because the rabies-carrying bat is well-known for spreading the deadly disease rabies, bats can make a cat sick. A cat that consumes an infected bat is less likely to contract rabies than a cat that has been bitten.

What is the purpose of cats catching bats?

Cats frequently learn the location of a bat roost and will return to catch bats as they leave the roost, so keeping your cat inside at night can save an entire colony. Furthermore, International Cat Care recommends keeping cats inside at night to reduce the risk of injury and other dangers outside.

What happens if your cat catches a bat?

Call your veterinarian and explain what happened. Make plans to quarantine the cat. Once the required time has passed and she has shown no symptoms, get her a rabies shot and keep them informed.
