Do koi fish sleep? - Kylon Powell

Writer Gabriel Cooper

Not in the way we think of it, but koi and other pond fish do sleep in Oklahoma. Because fish lack eyelids, they are unable to close their eyes. Instead, fish can take a break by floating in place or nestling into a comfortable spot in your pond.

What is the best way to tell if my koi is sleeping?

Koi do not sleep the same way humans do. They can’t close their eyes because they don’t have eyelids, and they don’t dream, as far as we can tell. Of course, koi require rest, but these are periods of deep rest rather than sleep as we know it.

Do koi like to be illuminated at night?

Koi are especially active in the evenings, when our lights are turned on. We also don’t typically leave them on all night, so your fish will be fine. The lights will not interfere with your fish’s resting habits, and you will be able to enjoy your pond all evening.

Do koi fish require darkness?

If they have plants to eat, they will do so at night unless it coincides with their feeding schedule. Even if you only have one koi in your pond, it will sleep for a few hours during the day and a few hours at night, but it will still require a period of darkness.

What happens to koi fish at night?

When there is no light from the sun, Koi stop swimming actively and become quiet at the bottom. They appear to be sleeping.

When is the best time to feed koi?

When your pond is warmest and your koi have a high metabolism, it is best to feed your koi midday, around noon or 1pm, when your pond is warmest and your koi have the most direct sunlight.

What time of day do koi tend to be most active?

According to some research I’ve seen, Koi are most active starting at dusk and continuing into the night. Certain planktonic organisms rise to the surface of the pond to feed at night. In doing so, they attract a variety of insect species that feed on these organisms.
