Do Peonies Need Ants? - Kylon Powell

Writer Ethan Hayes

Peonies don’t need ants to bloom, as is commonly believed. When peonies and ants interact, they form a type of mutualism in which two species of organisms benefit from each other’s activity. Ants feed on peony flowers, and the ants in turn protect the blossoms from other flower-feeding insects. Ants are a win-win situation.

Can peonies open without ants?

The myth that peonies need ants to open their buds has been around for a long time. Peonies bloom when ants “tickle the buds” or “lick the sugar,” according to a common adage. Nope. Without ants, a peony will bloom beautifully.

Do ants harm peonies?

Unlike flies or certain types of aphids, these insects don’t necessitate a chemical spray to get rid of them. It’s not going to harm your plants at all if you see them in your garden. There is a common belief among some that peonies necessitate ants in order to bloom.

Do ants like peonies?

Peonies are a favorite among ants for the same reason we do: they’re delicious. Sugary nectar droplets form around the green outer part of the flower as the flower buds form (called the sepal). All of us know how much ants enjoy sweets. That they would be drawn to such a sticky nectar is understandable.

Where is the best place to plant a peony?

Peonies do best in a sunny, well-drained location. It’s also critical that the area around the plant has good air circulation. Botrytis, the peony’s only serious disease problem, can be avoided with these growing conditions.

Should you plant peonies by your house?

Plant your peonies away from the house as a side note. Peonies draw ants, whether or not they’re needed. Infestation is almost certain if your plants are too close together.
