Snakes inhale and exhale by opening their nostrils and mouths to the flow of air. In order to move air into and out of the lungs, they will contract their rib cage. This will allow oxygen to circulate through the body and expel carbon dioxide. Using their glottis, they can also take a breath while eating.

Most snakes only have one working lung and don’t require the exchange of respiratory gasses to live their entire lives in the open environment. When they contract the muscles in between their ribs, they also breathe.
