Do you go in the sauna before or after work out?

Writer Robert King

Some people like to pregame their workout by sitting in a sauna for a little bit. Others like to unwind after they work out by sitting in the sauna. A lot of people base their routines around this question: do you go in the sauna before or after work out? Fitness experts don’t agree on which is better. Some say that if you want to get a best sweat, then you should go sauna after your workout. To them, this makes the most sense because your body is still warm and loose from exercising, which allows for an easier sweat.

However there are benefits to going in the sauna before a workout as well. You can do some light stretching and meditation while sitting in the sauna for 10 to 20 minutes.

The sauna is often thought of as a way to relax but it can also be used for revitalizing the body with heat before intense exercise or competition. “Sauna use pre-exercise has been suggested to have beneficial effects on physical performance by improving arterial blood flow, decreasing muscle tension, and promoting recovery. Some people believe that a sauna is a good way to get a good sweat going before you begin your workout.

This argument has little merit because getting a proper workout and getting a proper sauna session are two different things entirely.

I recommend that you sit in the sauna before your workout, not after. I think it’s really important to get yourself loose and prepared for whatever exercise routine you’re about to do. I feel like sitting in the sauna before working out loosens up my muscles and gets me ready to break a sweat. The sweatier you are when you start your workout, the better your workout will be.

I also recommend that you don’t do any specific exercises or stretches before your sauna session. That’s just my opinion though. If you want to stretch out in there I won’t judge because obviously it works for some people. Just try not to fall asleep
