Does acupuncture work for heavy periods?

Writer David Wilson

Yes, acupuncture can work for heavy periods. Heavy menstrual bleeding, or menorrhagia, is estimated to affect around 2% of women and can have a significant effect on their lives. Heavy periods can result in iron deficiency and anemia which is the most common preventable cause of disease worldwide. The condition can also cause problems with social and work life as well as making people feel unwell.

Heavy periods are common among women at menopause, but they can also occur during or after menopause. Women who have heavy periods are more likely to be advised to have a hysterectomy (removal of the womb) if their symptoms do not improve. However, this operation does not guarantee that periods will stop being heavy with some women reporting that their flow became even heavier following surgery.

There are various treatments available for heavy menstrual bleeding including hormone treatments and medications which help control blood loss by making the lining of the womb thinner so it bleeds less severely during each period. But none of these treatments will work for everyone so there is a need for further treatment options especially those which do not involve surgery.

Some women report good results with acupuncture for heavy periods while others say it has no effect whatsoever on their condition. Acupuncture treatment is painless, there are no side effects and the sessions can be readily fitted around any other treatments you may already be having so it is worth talking to your GP or gynecologist about whether it might be suitable for you.

Acupuncture works by stimulating points along the meridians to bring about a balanced flow of energy in the body; this can help release blockages, enhance blood flow and improve tissue quality which means that the organ systems work at their optimum level. It can also encourage self-healing by balancing harmful emotions which result in the stagnation of Qi (energy) within the body’s meridians and the internal organs.
