A large variety of plant-derived essential oils were tested as repellents against adult Japanese beetles. It tested individual and combination oils in traps that were baited using Japanese beetle lures. The captures of beetles were compared to traps that were baited only with Japanese beetle baits. The combination of peppermint oil with wintergreen oil, and wintergreen + ginger oil effectively repelled beetles from traps. Although more research is required, this research suggests that there is potential to develop Japanese beetle repellents. 

These repellents are safer than those who have not been trained in chemical insecticide use and could be used in organic crop production .After 41 oils were tested to see if they could deter Japanese beetles attracted by strong attractants; the most effective were peppermint oil and wintergreen oils.
