Does sesame oil have gluten?

Writer Caleb Butler

Gluten-free is Sesame Oil. Gluten, a protein complex made up of wheat, barley, and rye, is only produced by grasses belonging to the Triticeae tribe. This tribe of grasses is not related to the sesame plant. The plants and seeds do not produce gluten. It is safe to eat, even if your allergy to gluten is present.

If you are extremely sensitive or concerned about cross-contamination from gluten-containing products, you may want to look for sesame oils brands that have a gluten-free label. This is just as you would for any edible product. Sesame oil is used for cooking and for medical and cosmetic purposes for many generations. The sesame seeds are used to extract this oil. It is extremely popular in Asian countries. Except for a few oils derived from gluten plants like the wheat germ oil and some other oil varieties, edible is generally free of gluten.

Cross-contamination can lead to natural gluten-free oils containing gluten.

This can happen when oil comes into contact with gluten-containing ingredients or manufacturing equipment. It is possible for oil to come into contact with gluten-containing foods while cooking at home or in restaurants.

This could be due to common utensils or reusing oil for different foods, even gluten-free. You should be aware of all edible items you purchase, regardless of whether they are oil or other gluten-containing products. Look out for “gluten-free” labels to ensure that the product does not contain gluten at levels below those allowed.

Archeologists believe that the Indian subcontinent first domesticated sesame 5500 years ago. Both black and white sesame seeds are high in manganese and copper as well as iron, magnesium, and calcium. The seeds are rich in fat and also have phytosterols. These phytosterols can lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of certain types of cancer.
