Does Tea Tree Oil Repel Gnats?

Writer Sarah Silva

The term “gnat” is broad and refers to a variety of kinds of fly-like insects. As per the Encyclopaedia Britannica, gnats refer to fruit midges, flies and black flies, and the fungus gnat. The authors can define them as “small flies that bite and annoy humans.”

Gnats that are found around your house can be a major problem and getting rid of they can be a challenge. There are a few of them. tiny flying creatures could turn into a huge population of gnats once they start breeding. Fruit flies and gnats like rotten fruit in garbage bins. Because of this, you’ll often see gnats flying about the kitchen. Gnats are attracted to humid areas like drains, and there’s even a fungus that could destroy the root systems of your house plants.

Tea essential oil from trees can be used as a repellent against gnats. Check a small part of the cloth before ensuring that the oil will not cause staining. It can also be diluted and applied directly on the skin by adding a small amount in one 1 ounce of carrier oil, like olive or jojoba oil.

The purpose of this study was to assess the repellent and insecticidal effects of Melaleuca alternifolia (tree oil), and andiroba, Carapa guianensis, essential oils that have been tested on two species of insects. In vitro tests were conducted on free-living adult flies that were collected and kept at a laboratory. To assess the insecticidal effect of the essential oils, adult fly flies from Haematobia (L.) and (L.) [both: Diptera (also known as gnats): H. Irritatans ] were separated by species in test cages (n 10 per group) and examined using oils with levels of 1.0 percent and 5.0 percent, with negative control to verify the test.

Both oils had insecticidal effects. After 12 hours of exposure, tea tree oil at a 50% concentration of 5.0 percent was able to eliminate an insect called M. domestica with 100.0 percent efficacy. However, the efficacy of andiroba oil with a concentration of 5.0 percent was 67.0 percent. Both oil types were found to be effective as insecticides against H. Irritatans at all concentrations for up to 4 hours.

The repellent effects of oils at a concentration of 5.0 percent were evaluated in live Holstein cattle naturally infested with H. irritans. Both oils showed repellency after 24 h. The number of flies that were on the cows that were treated using tea tree or andiroba oils was 61.6 percent and 57.7 percent, respectively. This was less than the number of flies observed on control animals. We can conclude the essential oils possess repellent and insecticidal effects on the type of fly that was used for all of this research.

Half a cup of hot water along with two teaspoons of vinegar from apple cider, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and six drops of liquid dish soap might be enough to solve your gnat-related problems. The flies will be enticed by the sweet mixture however, once they’ve dipped into a glass of water, the dish soap’s sticky residue will keep them.
