What is a fender on a fireplace?

It is traditional to place a fire fender around your hearth to prevent soot or ash from falling onto your carpet.

What part of the fireplace is the fender?

Ashes and flying sparks can cause serious damage if they are allowed to escape from the fireplace, so a fireplace fender is typically a short screen placed in front of it.

What is a metal fender for a fireplace?

The ash, soot, and embers are contained by low metal frames installed in front of the fireplace. A low metal barrier is used to keep coals from falling into the fireplace.

What are andirons made of?

Devices made of metal or ceramic (rarely) are used to hold the firewood in place. Most of the time, they stand on short legs and are attached to a guard that stands upright. It is the job of the guard to keep an eye on the burning logs in the fireplace.
