Where should sconces be placed over a fireplace?
Consider the width of the mantel when placing sconces on either side of the fireplace. It’s best to hang them over both ends of your mantel if your fireplace is very wide. Sconces should be placed about eight inches from the sides of a fireplace’s opening if it is smaller.
Are sconces outdated?
Sconces, despite being among the oldest lighting fixtures, are still in style. My niece’s room had the best lighting because of it. Because my niece is getting older, she wanted to get rid of her nightlight.
Why is it called a sconce?
Both types of sconce are derived from the Latin root abscondere, which means “to hide.”
What is a Wallchiere sconce?
A wall-mounted lamp that resembles a free-standing torchiere lamp is referred to as a “Wallchiere” for a reason. Typically, it serves one of two functions: directing light upwards or illuminating the room as a whole. It’s usually tall and slender, like a torch, just like a torchiere.

Wall sconces are typically installed 60″ to 72″ above the finished floor. There are many ways to customize the look of your hallway, depending on the layout of your home. Sconces are traditionally spaced six feet apart horizontally.
How far should sconces be from a picture?
According to my own experience, the distance between a painting and its sconces should be no less than six inches and no more than a foot-and-a-half away, depending on where on the wall you’re placing them (also depending on how large the shade on the sconce is, if any).
