Can you frame a fireplace with wood?
The exterior face of a masonry fireplace and the interior surface of the nearest flue lining should be at least 6 inches away from any combustible framing.
Can you frame around a fireplace?
As with building a new fireplace, enclosing an existing one with framing is no different. We still had to keep the face of the fireplace covered in non-flammable material. For cable management, we built a chasis. Framing also served as a support structure for the cladding and the plywood and cement board substrates.

The bottom of the mantel must be at least 12″ away from the top of the fireplace box according to most housing codes and the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA). Your mantel’s Face Height is the most important factor in determining how far away it is from the camera.
