How far away can you hear the ocean?

You’re on a beach and hear the ocean. How far away can you be and still hear it? This varies depending on the conditions of both the beach and where you are, but we tried to figure out what some average numbers might be.

The ocean is a very large source of the sound – all the waves, currents, and storms – but what does that mean in terms of how far away you can hear it? To find out, we headed to Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska. If you were standing by some water there, you could probably still hear the ocean even though California is more than 7200 miles (11000 kilometers) away! We wondered if average conditions would let someone hear an ocean from as far away as they might care to venture. So we asked many people what would be the maximum distance they would prefer to travel and still stay within earshot of the surf pounding against the shore. Some

People wanted to visit the beach on vacation and be able to hear it at night, some said they would want to use it as a landmark if they were caught in the fog. So we took what we learned from those conversations and worked with scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) who helped us understand how sound waves travel over water. We had probably never thought of that before – but knowing that makes all the difference.

We decided our imaginary person might want to visit a beach on an Alaskan island for vacation for instance – so we looked at some weather data and figured out how far out you can see someone standing on the shore: about 2 miles (3 km). So now we had a good idea how far away someone could hear the surf. Scientists at SIO also helped us come up with a graph of sound level versus distance, and we matched it to our scenario: one person wanting to hear the ocean from about 2 miles (3 km) away.

What the scientists said was that when you’re in a quiet place without any noise, the ear just naturally amplifies things by itself – this is called “the quiet gain” and your brain seems to step in and say “I need to hear something!” but when there’s a lot of background noise around – then it doesn’t seem as loud because the brain knows no matter how much you amplify it, there’s always going to be more noise so…why bother?

Why is the ocean louder at night?

It is actually cooler at night than during the day. The refractive index, a measure of how well air bends sound waves, decreases as the temperature rises. Because of the higher refractive index of the air at night, more sea sounds are directed (bent) towards the land.

Can I hear ocean?

Holding a shell to your ear allows you to hear ocean waves lapping on a beach no matter the distance you actually are from the ocean. The ocean can’t be inside that shell, that much is obvious. It’s not the same “ocean” sound when shells are tested in a sound-proof room, where the air is still moving.
