When you first start Jiu Jitsu, your instructor will put you into beginner classes. Classes designed for beginners are divided into two categories: self-defense or sport Jiu jitsu.
You will be taught some techniques that are applicable to both. However, most beginners learn self-defense Jiu Jitsu first.
The art of Jiu Jitsu is based on the principle of efficiency. This means that if two people are fighting and they use all their strength, then both will lose energy fast, making them useless in a short period of time.
Jiu Jitsu is about taking your opponent down and putting them in a pin position, either with their arm bent to the back or with someone on top of them. Once you put your opponent to this point, they can’t move because all their energy has been used up to try and escape from the hold.
Once learned, Jiu Jitsu can be used in many situations. On the street, you only need to worry about defending yourself with moves that will shut down your opponent quickly. You do not have to go for a submission or take an aggressive position that could injure them even more.
Self-defense techniques start out by teaching you how to escape from every day holds, then once you know that, the instructor will show you how to take your opponent down. After this, Jiu Jitsu becomes a game of escaping holds and pinning them down until they give up.
Learning self-defense is about knowing when to use it too. If someone is trying harm against you or another person, then you have the right to defend yourself, however, you should try to escape first.
