How Long Does it take to Replace Spark Plugs?

Writer Sarah Silva

There is a gap present between two electrodes through which a spark has to jump. When this happens, a small amount of metal on each electrode burns off or simply erosion occurs. With the passage of time, the gap keeps on growing as a result of which time comes when spark can no longer jump. That’s actually when you start getting lesser acceleration and gas mileage also becomes low.

All the spark plugs aren’t actually rated for 100,000 miles, few carmakers also recommend the replacement of these spark plugs at an interval of 30,000 miles also. So, in order to get to know about replacing spark plugs, don’t forget to take a look at the manual offered by the owner. If you don’t know exactly when was the last time you changed those spark plugs, just pull them and see the gap. This will help you in knowing whether to replace spark plugs or not.

It won’t take you more than 3 hours to get this job done, from removing the intake manifold to accessing all the coils in order to get close to sparking plugs. If you’re doing it for a misfire, get ready to replace coil boots along with coils also. This will help you get rid of the leakage of oil into those holes. In that case, you’ll have to spend at least two more hours. However, this may be injurious to your or labor’s health also. In most cases, the replacement of spark plugs is considered to be a part of maintenance and it’s better to not let the oil leak into those spark plug holes, otherwise, this may cost you two to three additional hours.
