It is important to keep an eye on the reel spool to see if there are any irregularities in the amount of line filling the spool. The reel’s performance will suffer if the line is too long or too short.

How many yards of braided line do I need for a spinning reel?

Monofilament backing should be used on your reel between 50 and 100 yards, depending on the reel’s capacity and the length of the line. Allow for at least 100 yards of braid on top of the backing, filling the reel to within 1/8 of an inch or so of the spool rim, before you begin reeling.
