How often should I clean my roller skate bearing?

Writer Ethan Hayes

Skate bearing needs to be cleaned about once every two to three months. You need to clean them more often if they are getting wet or you are skating under damp conditions. Skating in dirt, mud, water will cause the bearing to get dirty faster. Some bearings have shields over them that keep the dirt out but once they are taken off it’s hard to put them back on so you should remove them every few months and clean the bearing with soap and water then lubricate them with oil. If you don’t want to take your shield off periodically just spray some light oil into the track before each skate this will protect your bearings from debris for a very long time.

Why should you clean the roller skate bearing regularly?

You need to clean the skate bearings regularly because they will stop working properly if you don’t. You can’t really feel how dirty your roller skate bearing is until it’s too late. Then your skating will suffer because of a slow-moving or non-moving bearing that would have been easily fixable if only you had cleaned them earlier.

How does dirt affect roller skate bearing?

Dirt and debris will attract water. Water mixed with dirt is the worst thing for bearings because it causes more of a problem than just being dirty. All the dirt particles will stick to the water and you end up with a big chunk that causes a lot of friction in your bearing making it slow or causing an obstruction.

How do you clean your roller skate bearing?

To clean your roller skate bearing all you have to do is take them out of your wheels, wash them off with soap and water and dry them off. Then re-oil them with a light oil made for skating bearings, not bike bearings because the bike bearing is thicker and doesn’t have a roller to push down on the dirt particles.
