How often should I feed my fish?

Writer Emily Cortez

Feeding your fish once or about twice a day is usually sufficient. Some hobbyists have been known to even fast their fish for one or two days a week. Larger, more sedentary fish can go between meals for longer than smaller, more active fish.

How much do you feed a fish on a daily basis?

Most fish can survive on just one or two feedings per day. Most fish require 16 to 24 hours to digest the food they eat, so a once-daily feeding is adequate. Some owners, on the other hand, prefer to feed their fish very lightly twice a day.

How long can a fish survive without eating?

Adult fish can survive for a week or two without eating. Young fish, on the other hand, lack the fat stores of adult fish and cannot go long without eating. That doesn’t mean you should skip feedings on a regular basis, but your fish can go without food for a long holiday weekend.

How frequently do you change the water in your fish tank?

There are various approaches to how much and how frequently water should be changed, but 10% to 25% every 1 to 2 weeks is a good rule of thumb. Smaller, more frequent water changes are preferable. Don’t vacuum the gravel just yet because you might disturb the good bacteria that are just starting to colonize your aquarium.

Is it permissible to feed fish every other day?

Most fish can survive on just one feeding per day. Some owners, however, prefer to feed their fish twice a day. Young, growing fish may require three or more meals per day. Most fish can survive on two meals per day.

Do fish like it when the light is turned on?

Aquarium fish do not require light, and it is best to turn it off at night. Fish can become stressed if the light is left on because they require darkness to sleep. Too much light will cause algae to grow quickly, making your tank appear dirty. So, in a nutshell, no, do not leave your lights on.
