How safe is tandem skydiving?
Sarah Silva
Tandem skydiving is widely regarded as the safest type of skydiving available. According to statistics, one tandem student skydiving fatality occurs for every 500,000 tandem jumps, which means that the odds of dying are one in a million.000002 percent! According to the National Safety Council, a lightning strike or being stung by a bee are the two most common causes of death in the United States.

As previously stated, many of today’s skydiving fatalities are caused by experienced skydivers who are pushing the boundaries and expanding the risk envelope of their sport. Or, to put it another way, these skydivers are the Corvettes of parachutes. As with driving an 18-wheeler truck, the equipment used in tandem skydiving is less responsive and peppy, and much more docile.
Although there are risks involved (our attorney advised us to emphasize this), they are manageable. While it is not required to do a tandem skydive before learning to skydive, it is highly recommended because the training for a tandem skydive and the free-fall experience better prepares an individual for the learn to skydive program (AFF), which serves as the introductory training program for learning to skydive solo.
Conclusion
As a result of the high level of experience of the tandem instructor and the fact that the equipment is not used for high-performance maneuvers, the risk quotient is significantly reduced when tandem skydiving.
