How to adjust handbrake on bmw e46

Writer Robert King

Adjusting the hand brake on a BMW E46 is not as difficult as it seems. In fact, with the right instructions, it can be an easy process. Here are the steps you need to take to adjust your handbrake on a BMW E46:
1. Park your car on a level surface and apply the handbrake.
2. Try to push your car forward. If the car moves, you should adjust your handbrake first.
3. Place chocks on both rear wheels (usually wooden blocks will be enough).
4. Loosen the bolt on the lower left side of the handbrake that is connected to the cable with a 13mm wrench.
5. Pull the handbrake cable all the way up to disconnect it from the car and then tighten the adjustment nut on top of the upper left side with a 13mm wrench.
6. Lower your handbrake all the way down by turning its upper right bolt with a 13mm wrench until it is loose again.
7. Pull the handbrake cable up and tighten its upper right bolt with a 13mm wrench.
8. Make sure the adjustment nut on top of the upper left side is tightened securely with a 13mm wrench.
9. Try to push your car again in order to check if the handbrake holds it firmly in place or if it needs to be adjusted again.
10. Repeat the steps until you are happy with the results. Once done, tighten all bolts securely with a 13mm wrench.
However, if you want your car’s handbrake to work properly, it is recommended that you have them adjusted by one of our professional mechanics at Your Mechanic as they are more familiar with the specifics of each make and model.
How do I increase the efficiency of my handbrake?
If you want to increase the efficiency of your handbrake, it is recommended that you replace the brake shoes. This will prevent damage to other components, such as your car’s drums or cables, and will ensure a smoother braking experience. Replacing the drum if necessary is also advisable.
