One of the great benefits of wood is that it’s easily enhanced by applying a stain or finishing oil.

Fusion Stain and Finishing Oil is a low-VOC, exterior-grade, penetrating wood finish that gives your DIY projects an elegant, professional look.

It’s also easy to apply and has natural UV protection that helps prevent fading. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply Fusion Stain and Finishing Oil:

Apply Fusion Stain as per instructions

The first step is to apply the stain. Use a clean, dry brush and ensure it’s the same size as the stain you’re using.

Apply in the direction of the grain, spreading from top to bottom. Brush in a circular motion, so you get an even coat over your entire project piece.

Apply thin coats rather than thick layers because this method allows for more penetration into all areas of your material, producing richer color tones and less blotchy spots on your final piece.

Allow drying for 48 hours

Once you have allowed the stain to dry for 48 hours, you can finally apply your finishing oil. For best results, use a high-quality brand of finishing oil appropriate for the type of wood you are using.

If you try to apply your finishing oil too soon after applying the stain, it will not soak into the wood properly and could be wiped away with just water.

Apply one even coat of Finishing Oil evenly with a brush (or roller).

Once you’ve completed the first sanding step, it’s time to apply one layer of Finishing Oil evenly with a brush or roller.

Use a small brush for tight corners and a roller for large areas. Be sure to apply in a circular motion and use a clean cloth.

Allow 3-4 hours to dry.

Allow 3-4 hours to dry. If you want to do two coats, this is how long you’ll need to wait between them.

Wipe on a second coat of Finishing Oil and allow it to soak in for 15-30 minutes before wiping off any excess.

Before we get started, prepare your surface by cleaning it with Fusion Cleaner and wiping off any excess dirt or dust with a dry cloth.

Next, apply Finishing Oil using a clean cloth (you’ll want to ensure no waxy residue on your fabric).

Apply the oil in long strokes and work back and forth over the entire piece of furniture until you’ve covered it completely.

Let the oil settle into the wood for 15-30 minutes before wiping any excess with a dry cloth. The longer you wait, the darker fate and shinier your piece will be once it dries.

Letting this first coat dry overnight should give you great results; however, if you’d like more depth or glossiness, go ahead and repeat steps 3 & 4 until desired.

Dry time is 24-48 hours, depending on your local climate.

Depending on the climate you live in, dry time can vary, and the general rule is that dry time is slower and faster in humid climates.

As pointed out earlier, resin-based finishes are water-repellent but not waterproof.

That means they’re susceptible to moisture absorption (from humidity) or evaporation (from heat), which will cause them to change their appearance over time.

Conclusion

Applying Fusion Stain and Finishing Oil is simple once you’ve chosen the right colors for your project.

You can mix colors to create custom shades, but its recommend using lighter stains on top of darker ones to avoid darkening them too much.

Just remember that oils will dry more quickly than stains do, so make sure you allow enough time for both steps to be completed before the oil sets.
