How to change hydraulic oil in zero turn
John Campbell
If you’re unsure of when the transaxle’s oil changed out, be on the safe side. Transaxle oil is a form of heat transfer and, once it has broken down it’s no longer a viable fluid for the critical mechanical parts within the transaxle. A brand-new Gravely zero-turn lawn mower requires the transaxle oil to be changed within the initial 75 hours of operation however, it will only need to be changed once every 400 hours following that.

- Place the unit on a level, flat surface, allow the hot parts to cool, and then remove the key for the ignition.
- Put a drain pan on the transaxle that is being taken care of.
- The filter’s guard is removed and the filter of the transaxle. Get rid of the filter and the guard.
- Take off the vent port for the transaxle plug and let the oil drain.
- Cleanse the surface of the filter’s mounting and lubricate the gasket on the filter using fresh hydraulic oil.
- Install filter and filter guard.
- The manufacturer’s recommended oil type and quantity to the transaxle’s oil expansion tank until the oil is at the highest point in the port for venting.
- Install the hydraulic oil vent plug.
- Add oil to the transaxle expansion tanks of oil until the tank’s level of fluid reaches the cold fill line.
- Hydraulic oil purge system.
When the transaxle oil is changed air pockets could be entangled within the transaxles. This requires the need to eliminate air out of the transaxles as soon as possible after the service has been completed. Once purging has been completed check the transaxle expansion tanks for oil and then make sure that the oil is positioned to reach an empty line of every tank, if needed. The most obvious reason is to do an oil change in the recommended intervals in your manual. If you aren’t able to recall the time of the last oil change on your mower make sure you are in the safe zone and make sure you change it as well as the oil filter.
