How to change mileage on bmw e46?

Writer Gabriel Cooper

Mileage on a BMW E46 can be easily changed with a few simple steps. Follow these instructions to change your car’s mileage:
1. Locate the instrument cluster and remove the screws that hold it in place.
2. Disconnect the wiring connectors and take the cluster out of the car.
3. Find the adjustment screws on the back of the instrument cluster.
4. There should be 3 or 4 screws that adjust mileage–each set is generally 10,000 miles apart (one screw may control 5K, another may control 15K, the first step is to loosen each of these screws. Do not remove any of them at this point.
5. Look at the mileage display on the cluster and make a note of where the needle is pointing.
6. Now, turn the screwdriver clockwise to decrease the mileage by 1,000 miles (or counterclockwise to increase it). It’s a good idea to use a small screwdriver for this step–the screws are small and you do not want to apply too much torque.
7. Turn the ignition on (without starting it) and check your new mileage–if it’s not correct, keep adjusting these three screws until it is right. It should only take about 3 or 4 times of loosening and tightening each screw to get to the correct reading.
8. Replace the cluster in the car and reattach the screws.
9. Start the car and check that the new mileage is displayed correctly.

Why do you need to change your car’s mileage?

There are a few reasons why you might want to change your car’s mileage. Perhaps you just bought a used car and want to adjust the odometer to reflect the correct mileage. Or maybe you’ve been driving more or less than you actually have, and want to adjust the car’s reading to match your actual mileage.

The most important reason is that if you sell your car, you must legally report the correct mileage to the new owner. Changing your car’s mileage is an easy way to meet this legal requirement–if someone checks your car’s history against its odometer number, it should show up as being accurate.
