How do you clean dirty alpaca fleece?
The following are the simple steps I use to clean alpaca wool:The fiber should be placed in the water and pushed down (don’t agitate it too much!). Allow 20–30 minutes of soaking time for the fiber. Another basin of clean, warm water should be filled. The fiber should be soaked for about 20 to 30 minutes. If you think the fiber is still dirty, go back and do Steps 3–4.
Can you wash alpaca fleece in the washing machine?
Using a washing machine is not recommended. So, if you must wash it by hand, place the garment in a pillowcase and place it in the washing machine on the gentle cycle with cool water. Should alpaca fleece be washed before spinning?
No washing is necessary before spinning the unwashed raw alpaca fleece. Other oils are not present in it. In order to avoid a matted felt mess, avoid agitating the fleece when washing it. Place the fleece cut-side up on a table.
How do you prepare an alpaca fleece for spinning?
For a quick recap, I use zippered mesh laundry bags to segregate out the fleeces. Dawn dish detergent and about 1/4 cup of hot water are all that’s needed to wash the alpaca in my washing machine. After 20 minutes of soaking (without agitation), I only drain and spin (no rinse water).
How do you wash an alpaca blanket?
Dry cleaning your alpaca throw is recommended, but hand washing it with gentle, non-abrasive soap or even baby shampoo may be preferable. In other words, don’t wring it out; just let the water run off. To dry your throw, place it on a flat surface after you’ve washed it.

In the washing machine, alpaca wool sweaters made of 100% alpaca wool can be washed. It’s best to wash your alpaca sweater on a wool setting. In the absence of a wool setting, use cold water and a delicate cycle in your washing machine.
