Transmission fluid is a type of motor oil that helps to lubricate your transmission. It also acts as a coolant for your transmission and reduces the gear noise in the system. Transmission fluid is a dark red color and has a tendency to stain everything it touches, including your car’s engine.

If you have a car with an automatic transmission, you know how important it is to keep the fluid clean and free of debris. If you’re like most people, though, you probably don’t know how to do this. Here’s how to clean transmission fluid off your engine:

Drain the Transmission Fluid

The first step is to drain your transmission fluid. This is best done by removing the transmission dipstick or checking level in some other way (such as the window). Then, remove the plug on top of the transmission pan with a socket wrench and allow all of the fluid to drain into a pan or bucket.

Remove debris from the transmission pan with a rag and vinegar

Next, use a rag and vinegar (or baking soda) to clean out any debris still stuck inside your transmission pan. Soak the rag in vinegar or baking soda water and then scrub away at any remaining grime that hasn’t come out due to draining all of your old fluid from inside of it.

After this step, be sure to rinse off your rag thoroughly before returning it back into your car for reuse.

Finally, there are a few important safety notes. Transmission fluid is an oil-based lubricant which carries heat away from the engine, so while it may not look too nasty, it’s no small risk to get any on your skin or clothes. So long as you take care to avoid this, it shouldn’t be an issue.

Will transmission fluid hurt a motor?

If you continue to run your engine with transmission fluid in it, you risk damaging it because it won’t be getting the lubrication it needs to run properly. Due to the excess fluid in the engine, there is a real risk of blowing out seals.
