It’s important when preparing your pool for winter (whether by draining or in the case of in-ground pools, closing over with a cover) that you clear any debris which may have become stuck in your lines. This may include leaves and other organic material that can harm your equipment. It also includes dirt and other inorganic material that can block valves.
In order to clear your lines, you will need a leaf net and a pool skimmer. The key is to use the skimmer first because it has much larger holes than the net so
that gross debris passes through it. The leaves go into the leaf net. Rake the leaves
into a pile and then scoop them up with the net. Now you can use your skimmer to clean
out any dirt that has fallen into your pool. By using this process, you will be able to clear out any materials in your lines that may become impacted when it is time to open your pool next year.
This technique will ensure that your pump is working efficiently come spring.
You could drain the water, but lines need to be kept clear by using this method even if you are draining for the winter.
Make sure that you operate all of your equipment before leaving for the season to make sure everything continues to work correctly after being closed up during the winter months.
This method works best on vinyl lined pools as well as fiberglass pools because they are not left open into their next seasons, which can cause bacteria and algae growth at line level that gets stirred back up when the pool is opened again in the spring if they have not been properly cleaned out beforehand. These cleaning techniques will help you clean your lines so that they are ready for use in the coming season. When cleaning, you will want to check both line set valves and skimmer valves to ensure that they are closed properly.
By using these tips, you will be able to open your pool this spring without worrying about clogged lines or broken equipment because of debris left behind when closing your pool for winter.
