The City of Chicago coordinates dedicated bagged leaf bags and other collection trucks for yard waste to help residents clear their parks, yards, and storm drain of leaves and other debris. Yard waste is composed of grass clippings, leaves branches, brush clippings of shrubs along garden waste. Yard waste doesn’t include dirt or rocks.

The Chicago Yard Waste Program is a simple and effective method of keeping landfills clean as well as reducing pollution and making healthy soil. To participate, take your grass and leaves in a plastic or paper bag, and call 3-1-1 for a no-cost collection. Yard Waste services are available throughout the year, completely at no cost. Additional crews are ready to assist with annual Yard Waste Drives that are held to handle the additional demand.

In addition, yard waste makes up large portions of landfill spaces. In the United States yard waste is approximately 15 to 20% of the landfilled space. In Chicago, the Yard Waste Program diverts waste by extracting the nutrients in grass and leaves. Chicagoans may also opt to compost in their homes that can be accomplished in several different methods. Vermicomposting is which is where worms consume your food scraps. The final result is also compost. There is also the option of composting outside and collecting both food scraps as well as yard waste. Whatever method you choose to compost you’re helping to keep waste out of our landfills and reducing emissions. Since compostable materials account for around one-third of the waste we discard and you can drastically reduce the amount of waste you generate.

The blue cart program is a way to collect garden waste in the season. From April 1st to November’s end, The Department of Streets and Sanitation sends out a second truck to pick up yard waste. The yard waste is picked up every two weeks in the same week your blue cart is emptied. To have your yard waste removed and composted, it is necessary to should dispose of your yard waste in paper or plastic bags, and place the bags next to your recycling and garbage carts. Both kinds of bags can be accepted, however paper is more preferred since it is compostable with yard waste.
