How To Get A Snake To Come Out Of Hiding?

Writer Emily Cortez

How long do snakes stay in their hide?

The first sign that your snake is about to shed is when your normally active reptile becomes lethargic or hides. Before the shedding really gets going, there’s a one- to two-week waiting period. It is during this time of shedding that snakes are most vulnerable in the wild, and this is why pet snakes tend to hide when it happens.

Why is my snake always hiding?

Snakes’ eyesight is poor over long distances, so they become anxious in cages with lots of open space. As a result, nocturnal snakes (such as corn snakes) tend to hide during the day.

How do I get my snake to come to me?

Your snake must become accustomed to your scent in order to learn to recognize it. To get your snake to smell you, try holding your hand 3–4 inches (7.6–10.2 cm) away from its head. Slowly move your hand out of the way if it gets in striking position. Try moving your hand closer to your snake if it doesn’t respond.

What are snake hides?

It’s more than just a piece of decor for your reptile’s enclosure that hides (also known as reptile caves). They are essential to your reptile’s sense of security and well-being because they provide them with a place to hide when they want to be out of the public eye.

How big should snake Hides be?

If you’re looking for something that’s big enough to fit the snake, but small enough to feel like the walls are holding them in, you’ve found it. The height of the hide is usually 1.5x or 2x the thickness of the snake I expect to use it.
