How To Get Bird Out Of Garage

Writer Rachel Davis

Is the bird stuck in your garage seemingly unaware of the fact that you left the door wide open for the afternoon? Is it a result of all the shooing that you do to entertain it, or to entice them to leave?

It may not be as simple as you thought. Before you call animal patrol, consider the following options.

Open the Windows and Doors

It may not appear like it, but the bird stuck in your garage is likely eager to get out. It’s probably lost its natural behavior and is now stuck in a dark garage. Instead of moving between the hedges or trees, it’s now stuck between a rake and lawnmower.

Why put off getting it? Humans are often afraid of birds. Are you trying to get the bird out of your garage? The poor bird is probably now scared stiff.

What can you do? Here are some suggestions:

  1. Open all garage doors and windows.
  2. You could be an intimidating presence to the bird if you leave the garage. A little space might be enough for the bird to leave the garage on its own terms and peacefully.

Turn off all lights

Most birds, except for night-herons and night-hawks are diurnal, with the exception of owls and night-herons. Birds, like us, sleep at night and are active most of the day. You might consider creating a night space for your bird to help you get rid of it from your garage.

Here’s a handy method:

  1. Turn off the lights in your garage. Use a light shield to cover windows and other areas where light can enter.
  2. Let the bird rest for 30 minutes.
  3. After about 30 minutes, open slowly the garage or large door. The light will attract the bird to your home and encourage you to take it with you.

Use Bright Objects

Is the bird still stuck in your garage and has it not responded to any of the above? One of the following must be true:

  • A very stubborn bird is in your garage.
  • Your garage is truly luxurious. It’s a lucky bird, and it is fighting to stay there rent-free.

The bird must skedaddle regardless of the outcome. Here’s another gentle way to encourage birds to move:

  1. Keep one garage door open. Close all other exits.
  2. Brightly colored objects are a good way to lure birds away. This could be a lure for the bird to return outside if it has entered your garage looking for a nesting place.
  3. Get out of the garage. You might be able to scare the bird away from the garage if it is afraid.

Food and Water

It could have come to your home in search of food or water. Is there a way to get the bird to leave your home? Give it what it was for! Here’s how to do it:

  1. Keep one garage door open. Close all other exits.
  2. Place some birdseed into a shallow trough. The trough should be placed in front of the garage’s open door. Repeat the process with water from a shallow dish.
  3. Get out of the garage.

Install a fake owl

Fake owl decoys are a great way to get a bird out of a garage. Birds view owls like predators and will do everything they can to escape the decoy. Here are some ways you can put the decoy in place.

  1. Keep one garage door open. Close all other exits.
  2. Place the decoy in the eye-line area of the bird.
  3. Then get out of the garage. Once it has seen the fake owl, the bird will soon fly out of the garage.

These fake owl decoys can also be used to keep birds from entering your garage.

Catch the Bird

You tried everything, but the bird won’t move. If the bird refuses to move, then you may have to capture it and release it.

I can see what you are thinking. How do you catch a bird? Is it easier to let the bird run the garage and build another one? These steps will help you find the best way to catch a trapped bird.

  1. Turn off the garage lights. To make the garage as dark as possible, cover the windows.
  2. Wait an hour. Birds sleep at night and relax. The dark environment should encourage birds to seek shelter.
  3. After about an hour, enter slowly into the garage to locate the bird’s nest.
  4. Place the bird in a basket, or towel, and then take it outside.

To transport the bird outside, wrap it in a towel.

How long will a trapped bird live?

Is there a bird in your vicinity that is trapped? Birds can often find themselves in dangerous places like:

  • In the chimney or fireplace
  • In your attic
  • Between a wall

It may take some time to rescue a bird stuck in a tight spot. The question is: How long can a bird trapped in a tight spot last?

A trapped bird without water will feel weak within 1 to 20 hours of becoming stuck. A trapped bird won’t live for more than one to three days if it is starved.

If you suspect that a bird has become trapped in an unreachable area of your house, it is best to rescue it as soon as possible. If the bird is stuck in an area you are unable to reach, call a professional.

Preventing Birds from Entering Your Garage

It’s much easier to stop a bird from entering your garage than to remove it. Here are some things you can do to prevent birds from making their home in your garage.

Don’t store birdseed or food in your garage

In search of food, birds often end up in garages. You should not give birds anything that could lure them.

Keep your windows and doors closed

Are you having problems with birds in your garage? Keep your garage doors and windows shut as much as possible. You can also install bird nets on the windows. You can leave your windows open and not worry about birds.

Take birds out of the garage immediately they enter

The bird will build a nest in your garage if you give it enough time. It will become very difficult to remove once it has established a nest in the garage.

Why can’t birds get out of a garage?

Although birds can fly easily into garages with their doors open, they are not always able to find their way out. Federal and state laws protect most wild birds. They must be removed humanely to ensure that they don’t injure the birds or put themselves in danger.

What does it mean when a bird is in your garage?

Sometimes a bird will fly into a room to seek food or shelter. It is not uncommon for a bird to fly into your home or garage unintentionally. The bird may be looking for food or simply flying normally and ended up in a room with no exit strategy.

Is there a bird repellent spray?

Repellent Sprays. You can make a variety of bird repellent sprays at home, but the most common is one that contains vinegar, chili peppers, and water. After you are done, spray the repellent on any birds-prone areas using a plant mister.

What does it mean when birds are around your house?

The spiritual meaning of birds flying around our house is, like the Egyptian god, peace, freedom, and change. They are symbolic of a future transformation.

Do wind chimes keep birds away?

Wind chimes can deter birds. Birds will be scared away by the loud sound. But, if a bird becomes used to the wind chimes’ sound, it will stop being scared or deterred by it.
