How to increase oil pressure at idle

Writer Ethan Hayes

If you’re currently using 5W-20, you can change to 10W-30 instead. The slightly greater viscosity could help fill in the greater gaps and increase the clearance of the bearings within the engine. This will help to bring the oil tension back up to normal levels and let the pump maintain the correct pressure.

The oil levels are low.

One of the reasons for the low pressure of the oil when idling is the low level of oil. Apart from noticing low pressure in the oil at idle the low level of oil can cause an unpredictable low pressure in high-speed turns as the oil in the sump is pushed towards the side, away from the oil pickup tube.

It could be due to leaks in the piston rings, worn ones as well as excessive blowby, and damaged seals on valves. To resolve the issue of low oil levels temporarily, you could increase the amount of engine oil until you get to the correct level.

To know what can cause low pressure of oil at idle, we must be aware of the meaning of oil pressure and the reason it is important to keep the proper oil pressure. The pressure of oil is comprised of a variety of elements or components to ensure that it is properly maintained. It is a concern for the lubricant as well as the oil pump and even the distance it has to traverse to reach each corner and section within the engine.

Pressure on oil shouldn’t be either too high or too low. It is possible to check it by looking at your gauge of pressure or any other indication of oil pressure the car comes with. Older cars have an instrument cluster that displays an actual indicator of the oil’s pressure you can observe that typically shows between 50 and 60 psi. Modern vehicles now come with high oil warning lamps which flash whenever the pressure drops lower than 5-7 psi.
