How to install a truck tool box without drilling

Writer Emily Cortez

Some truck owners prefer to install a truck toolbox without drilling holes in their truck bed. This can be easily done by purchasing a no-drill installation kit from one of the many available manufacturers. The following steps will show you how to properly install your no drill truck toolbox.

Step 1: Place your no drill toolbox where you want it to be installed on your truck. The kit comes with a template that you simply place over the box and trace the outline of where you want each latch hole to be drilled.

Step 2: Outline all four holes with a marker, then follow step 3.

Step 3: Drill two small pilot holes into either side of the no drill toolbox using a 1/16th drill bit. Be careful not to go too far back when drilling or else you will encounter the bed sheet metal which will weaken it and could cause it to bend inwards towards your tailgate if you accidentally run through it while installing brackets later on. If this happens, remove your sharpie lines and start again at Step 1 above.

Step 4: Remove the template and grab your level to make sure it is sitting straight.

Step 5: Drill three 1/2 inch socket head cap screws into each pilot hole you made, but do not tighten them down yet.

Step 6: Place the no drill toolbox on top of two brackets and line up the pilot holes with the screw holes in the brackets, then fully tighten all six screws that you placed into your no drill truck toolbox. You can now load up your tools and head out onto the open road!

In conclusion, for those of you who wish to avoid drilling holes in your truck bed, a no-drill installation kit can be very convenient and cost-effective. If you follow the steps outlined above, the procedure should be pretty straightforward and simple enough to complete without causing damage to your truck.
