How to keep mice out of farm equipment?

Writer Ethan Hayes

Mice can cause thousands of dollars in damages. Mice can chew through wires, which can cause an electrical malfunction in farming equipment. They not only take your food and are able to transmit diseases and bacteria, but they also chew electrical wires and other equipment on your farm. The damage to the equipment can mean the equipment will be down for a while as it’s time to make money. In some instances, mice chewing wires has led to electrical failure and even fires.

Your chicken house, barn, or garage could be an inviting location for mice to build their home. Here are 8 ways that you can develop a reliable mouse control strategy:

  1. Determine the source of the problem. Check for evidence left behind like droppings (mice drop size droppings, whereas rat droppings are more than raisins.) If you are aware of the species you’re trying to control it is possible to narrow down the bait you’ll use.
  2. Install bait stations at every 100 feet along the perimeter of your structure as well as around any feed bins. Follow the label of your products. Make sure you do not place traps or bait stations inside the equipment cab, or you could risk having mice die in the cabin! Secure all bait in a tamper-resistant bait box.
  3. Clean up the brush and takedown fence lines around your property, so your mice don’t seek refuge in your home.
  4. Clean up the barn, sheds, or garage shop…any location where you store machinery or farm equipment. Do not leave any debris that could give shelter to animals.
  5. Keep seed and feed properly stored and do not leave any exposed.
  6. Make use of an air compressor to cleanse the farm machinery and equipment. Even the tiniest grain of corn left in the dirt will lure mice.
  7. Certain products like Fresh Cab, Ramik Green Nuggets, or Simply One Bit bars can help to repel mice. Set these products in close proximity to the source of water, and in close proximity to the shop or farm machinery (again do not put them inside the cabin).
  8. Some tractor forums recommend putting sheets of fabric in the tractor’s cab however, other forums have reported that mice utilize sheets for nesting supply. above-mentionedoned products are specifically designed to deter animals, could perform better.
