How to reset Toyota highlander maintenance light?
John Campbell
A maintenance light on Toyota highlander is a warning system that indicates when the engine oil, transmission fluid, or coolant levels are low.
The procedure for resetting your maintenance light on a Toyota highlander will vary depending upon which model of Toyota highlander you own. If you have a Toyota highlander with an automatic transmission, then you will need to follow this guide:
1. Turn off the ignition switch and remove the key from the ignition.
2. Open the hood and locate the fuse box.
3. Remove the cover plate located under the dash.
4. Locate the fuse labeled “Maint.” This should be in the middle of the fuse panel.
5. Unplug the wire connected to the Maint. Fuse.
6. Replace the cover plate and turn the ignition back on.
If you have a Toyota highlander with a manual transmission, then you will first need to find the fuse labeled “Mntl” for manual transmission or “Automatic” for automatic transmission. Then unplug the wire connected to that fuse. Then replace the cover plate and turn on the ignition.
If you did not see a fuse marked “Mntl” or “Automatic”, then you may need to call a mechanic.
Why do you need to reset the maintenance light?
A maintenance light on a Toyota highlander can indicate that one or more of the fluids needed by the engine is low. The level of each fluid depends on how much driving has been done since the last time it was checked. If the vehicle has been driven frequently, the oil level may be low. The same applies if the vehicle has been sitting idle for some time.
How often should I check my maintenance light?
It is recommended that you check the maintenance light at least once a month. However, if there is no change in the color of the maintenance light after several months, then you may want to consider checking the maintenance light less often.
What happens if I don’t reset my maintenance light?
If you fail to check your maintenance light, then the next time you start the car, the engine will probably stall out because the oil pressure sensor will detect that the oil level is too low. You will also notice a strong smell of burning oil as soon as you start the engine.
