How to winterize cabin plumbing

Writer David Wilson

Before draining any water, switch down the power to your hot water tank or water pump. It is much simpler to drain the reservoirs if you cease water pumping into them. Turn off the power to protect your hot water tank’s heating elements. They won’t attempt to heat water that isn’t there.

The initial stage is to address the inside plumbing of the cottage. In a perfect world, all water service pipes would drain to an identical location. Just like how sewer pipes slope towards septic tanks, the water supply lines would slowly slope towards a single set of drain valves.

  • Always open the drain valves. Close the taps to prevent water from escaping.
  • An air compressor should be connected to the drainage valve. This should only be done if there is still water in your drain line from improper drainage or sagging pipes. Next, run the water through the open faucets.
  • If the warm water reservoir is not on the floor, drain it. Clear the tank by attaching a water line to the tank’s foundation. This will guarantee that the storage drains smoothly and that water doesn’t really pool around the floor.
  • If the pressure tank isn’t located below your cottages (e.g. If the pressure tank is not located below your cottages (e.g. in a boathouse, special pump enclosure onshore), make sure that the line connecting it is also drained. The pressure tank uses a rubber dial to create and maintain the necessary pressure to push water through the pipes of your cottage. If the water in the storage tank freezes, it renders the task inoperable.
  • The drain plug should be removed from a jet pump. Allow water to drain completely from the gravity tank and pump. Also, you should remove the priming plug from the pump and keep it safe. Protect the turbine, barrel, and jet pump with 1 to 2 cups of plumber’s antifreeze. Disconnect the waterline and pull the pump to the shore.
  • Flush your toilet tank and bowl to get as much water as possible. A small cup can be used to bail the tank with some of its water. Landry suggests filling the container with 3 cups of antifreeze. This will stop any water leftover from freezing and cracking the toilets and prevent sewer gas from getting through the trap. Pour one cup of antifreeze down each sink and tub drain to create larger traps. Pour two cups of antifreeze down the drains in your shower stall.
