Female rats have a pleasant odour that is similar to grape soda in flavour. Male rats have a distinct fragrance that reminds me of warm taco chips. This is the natural musky aroma of the man, and you shouldn’t try to get rid of it if you don’t have to. If your rats’ cages smell like pee or excrement, this indicates that they need to be cleaned more frequently. Male rats may require their cage to be cleaned out on a daily basis, if not more frequently. Because some boys are clumsy, they pee in the same bed sheets that they sleep in.

If you use any shampoo other than a dog shampoo or a rodent shampoo, you will unintentionally change the pH of the rat’s skin, which is not good for the animal’s health. This causes an inflamed skin condition (which does not necessarily mean you can see the condition), which increases the rat’s odour even more.

So, your attempt to obtain a fresh-smelling rat will have backfired because you will find yourself trapped in a vicious loop that will terminate only when you decide to cease bathing the rat. Rats should not be bathed in baby shampoo or kitten/cat shampoo, as these products are not suitable. If you bathe your rat too frequently, you risk removing the oils from its coat and skin.
