THE DANGERS OF DRIVING WITH HEADPHONES?

Wearing headphones while driving increases your chance of being involved in an accident. If you are using headphones, you may be unable to hear others honking, screaming, or emergency vehicle sirens. 

This may result in slower response times and an increased chance of colliding. If you were using earphones at the time of an accident, the other motorist might use this to establish your guilt. 

Headphones may be distracting enough for a motorist to be held responsible for damages in an accident. Even if you do not cause an accident, using headphones may result in a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. 

This may occur if your use of headphones contributed to your traffic regulation violation, such as driving through a stop sign or failing to yield to pedestrians at a crossing. 

If your headphones sufficiently distract you to the point where you violate a traffic law, an officer may punish you with reckless driving. This crime carries a maximum punishment of $200 or a maximum of 30 days in prison.

To ensure your safety and the safety of others, avoid using headphones while driving as much as possible if you must use headphones while driving, set the level low enough to hear your surroundings. 

Utilize just one side of the earbuds to free up the other ear for listening. The optimal position for the headphone is in the right ear, farthest from the driver’s side window. Consider rolling down a window to improve your hearing of oncoming vehicles.

Maintain your focus on the road as you listen. Keep your eyes on the road and avoid looking away to tinker with the radio or your gadget. 

Maintaining caution while listening to headphones may assist you in demonstrating to authorities that you took all reasonable precautions to avoid an accident.
