Is it safe to bake paint in oven?

Is it safe to bake paint in the oven? Yes, it is, but there are some important things to remember. Most paints can be used for oven bake clay (polymer clay and polymer clay). But all paints are different and you need to know what they are made of before baking them.

Nontoxic paints are very brittle when baked, so you have to be extra careful with them. To play it safe, use non-toxic paint with a softener or plasticizer added.
Steps for baking Polymer Clay Beads
1. Bake at the lowest oven temperature possible, if advised on the paint can. Heat for 15 to 20 minutes per 1/4 inch of thickness until dry and slightly hard to touch. Baking time may be longer or shorter depending upon your oven type, air circulation, ambient temperature, etc. Always leave the oven door open a crack to prevent moisture build-up.
2. It is best to bake several pieces of clay at a time and place them on a wire cooling rack so that the air can circulate around each piece. Placing beads on their side helps them keep their shape while they cool.
3. After baking, let your beads cool for 24 hours. If they are still sticky, let them bake longer the next time.
4. If you want to make beads from clay that is not a polymer, paint the clay with a thin layer of acrylic varnish, sealer or glaze before baking it. This will prevent cracking and improve color depth.
5. For best results, do not overcook your beads. If the paint is an undercoat color, over baking may turn it into a topcoat and alter the final look of your beads.
6. Finally, mix paints before using them to get the most accurate colors for your project.
