Is mug oven safe? - Kylon Powell

Yes, stoneware mugs and some porcelain, metallic, and glass mugs that are labeled as oven-safe can go in the oven. Plastic and paper mugs should not go in the oven. When used properly, oven-safe mugs will not crack or leach chemicals to the food at high heat or when they are removed from the oven.

The FDA has a list of mug types and brands that can go in the oven. Any mugs specifically listed as safe for oven use should be fine, but you might want to check with manufacturer or at least ask your friends which brands have been successful. It would help others if you posted photos of any brands that have failed so others can stay away from them.
The FDA’s lists of mug types and brands that can go in the oven:
Stoneware mugs. If a mug is stoneware, it must be able to withstand normal kitchen use up to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. It won’t absorb odors or flavors like some mugs made of porcelain or ceramic.
Oven-safe porcelain and glass mugs. Some types of porcelain and glass mugs can go in the oven up to temperatures of 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Be sure they are labeled as safe for the oven or microwave, and check with your friends or manufacturer before using them.
Oven-safe metallic mugs. Some types of mugs with a stainless steel interior and the exterior surface can go in the oven up to temperatures of 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Check with your manufacturer first, then ask on Facebook or Twitter if they’ve used that brand before.
Melanin and plastic mugs. If you think your mug is made of melamine, check the label. Melamine mugs must stay below 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not try to put them in the oven or microwave, and don’t use abrasive cleaners on them.
